Three things to look for

The pandemic sadly shutdown the Big Sky Conference during fall of 2020. Unlike the Mountain West Conference and others, the Big Sky didn’t reverse course until spring 2021. Portland State, unlike their peers, did not play a full schedule in spring.

Prediction

When I typed out my 40-24 prediction last week, I wondered if I was shortchanging Hawaii. Turns out I was too optimistic. This week’s game against Portland State is historic, albeit frustrating. As of this posting, fans are not going to be allowed at the game. Shame. Hawaii, as of now, is the only FBS team willingly playing in front of no fans.

Why Portland State Will Win

It’s been a while since the Vikings have been able to play, but they bring back a decent running game that should be able to pound away a bit along with a passing game that will keep the heat on the Rainbow Warrior secondary.

Portland State Vikings

The Vikings are members of the FCS Big Sky Conference and are led by head coach Bruce Barnum who begins his 12th year.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

I don’t think UH could have looked worse against UCLA. Fortunately, I think we will see a very different team than what we saw in Pasadena. The Warriors had a combined -3 yards after three offensive drives last week.

Portland State vs. Hawaii Betting Pick

Regardless of how much better of a team I think Hawaii is and the fact that they have a great opportunity to bounce back in a return to the island this week, I cannot bring myself to lay 22 points after how this team performed last week. However, this team has consistently started games slow in Todd Graham’s time in Honolulu.

Why Hawaii Will Win

Oregon State couldn’t run against Purdue in the 30-21 loss. Hawaii might not have been great in the opener against UCLA, but it has the line to hold up a whole lot better as the season goes on.

Why Oregon State Will Win

Hawaii turned the ball over four times against Portland State, allowing the game to get a wee bit scarier than it should’ve been.
